1934. Private detective Miranda Green investigates a murder perpetrated in the British Embassy in Cairo, where a top secret document was stolen, risking to jeopardize both Buckingham Palace and the peace of the world. All those present in this closed place are suspected: the American photographer, the English student, the American actress, the Egyptian security guard, the ambassador interpreter, the Egyptian gardener and - why not? — the Ambassador himself. But who would have expected that a small group of Nazis would be behind a plot, risking to jeopardize both Buckingham Palace and the peace of the world?
Grade: NOT RECOMMENDED
While the movie's core mystery and themes of uncovering evil could be positive, the R-rating and genre suggest content that likely includes moderate violence and potentially strong language, making it problematic for Catholic families. The presence of a murder investigation, even if justified by the plot, often entails depictions that can be an occasion of sin or cause scandal.
The 'R' MPAA rating is the primary indicator for assigning a 'NOT RECOMMENDED' grade. While the overview suggests a compelling mystery with a clear antagonist (Nazis) and a protagonist seeking justice, R-rated films frequently contain elements that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching. These typically include moderate to strong violence (the central event is a murder), potentially graphic depictions of the crime scene or its aftermath, and strong language. The 'thriller' genre also often leans into suspenseful or suggestive situations that, while not explicitly sexual, can be an occasion of sin. The plot involves a murder and a stolen document, which implies themes of deceit and potentially further violence. While the film's ultimate message might be the triumph of good over evil (stopping a Nazi plot), the means by which this is portrayed, especially regarding violence and language, are likely to be problematic. Therefore, despite the positive theme of uncovering and combating evil, the probable presence of grave matter (violence, language) that is not trivial, leads to a 'NOT RECOMMENDED' grade for Catholic families, as it presents too many non-trivial moral problems and potential occasions of sin.
This review is based on traditional Catholic moral teaching as found in the Baltimore Catechism and the Ten Commandments. It is intended to help Catholic families make informed viewing decisions.
